Applied Behavior Analysis

Applied Behavior Analysis is the most effective treatment for Autism Spectrum Disorder. ABA is an empirical approach to modifying behaviors based on principles of learning theory. Behaviors reflect any action that can be performed by an individual: speaking, cleaning, eating, playing, anything! Our Behavior Analysts are able to assess behaviors, understand the functions behind why we do what we do, determine how the environment influences our actions, and apply systematic science-based interventions to modify behaviors. Simply put, ABA can be used to teach individuals necessary skills and modify behaviors that may interfere with daily living. ABA is unlike other therapies as it is rooted in science and research regulated by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board.

Services with ABA Helps

Home-Based Therapy

Your child's individualized treatment plan will be overseen by a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) and a team of therapists to target areas that require further development. Skill domains that often require support include language, play, adaptive, executive function, cognitive, and social skills. As a result of deficits in these areas, it is possible that your child may require additional support with decreasing challenging behaviors. These may present as tantrums, property destruction, aggression, self-injurious behaviors, self-stimulatory behaviors, or other forms of disruptive behaviors. Your treatment team will work with your family on tackling these behaviors to increase independence and access more opportunities in their day-to-day life.

Family Support Services

Having a child with special needs comes with a new set of challenges. Our model of ABA is family-centered treatment with caregiver collaboration during each stage of therapy. From the initial assessment to skill generalization, we want to empower families by providing support, education, and training. Support services include BCBA assistance at medical appointments, talking through challenging behaviors, training for secondary caretakers such as siblings and sitters, providing resources for advocacy, financial aid, and respite care, and more. We understand that caregivers know their children best and consider them a critical member of the therapy team. Regularly scheduled training with caregivers allows the BCBA to identify areas of need, prioritize learning to meet the child's goals, update caregivers on progress, and train caregivers on therapy implantation to generalize skills that are being taught.

We believe in improvement through involvement and are ready to help you hand-in-hand.

Community Outing and Social Groups

We want to make sure that your child can participate in family events and be able to experience new and exciting opportunities that help them learn and grow.  During community outings, your child's behavioral therapist will accompany your family to community locations and provide useful strategies to help your child tolerate changes in routine and sensory stimulation that may be aversive. Our goal is to teach children specific skills and appropriate behaviors relevant to their environments. This may mean sitting nicely in a restaurant, shopping for groceries using a list, or playing with peers at a playground. Behavioral therapists are trained to be discrete and facilitate as needed.

ABA Helps offers a small social skills group led by a behavioral team encompassing an experienced BCBA and behavioral therapist. Together, the behavioral team facilitates social engagement and addresses unique social needs with similarly aged peers. Our social group allows for a safe place to make lasting friendships and learn appropriate behaviors that will maintain and generalize to peers in their natural environment. All ages are welcome!

RSVP are required in order to arrange for socially appropriate peer groups.

Consultations

School

The most effective treatment plan is one that promotes collaboration across all environments, that includes school. Your child spends most of his day in school, thus most of his learning will occur during school hours. In order to ensure cohesive supports systems, our BCBA can attend IEP meetings, review and provide input on your child's school specific goals, and collaborate with your child's school team to ensure skills are being reinforced in both environments.

Medical

Each child has individualized needs which may or may not results from additional medical, developmental, or psychiatric disorders outside of an Autism diagnosis. Our BCBAs can collaborate with your child's medical team to provide insight on behavioral changes as a result of medication adjustments, develop behavioral goals for challenging behaviors that may interfere with your child's ability to receive medical care, and work on skills such as pill-swallowing or food selectivity.
